कथन
Hon. Chairperson, Sir, I rise to draw the attention of this august House to a vast yet under-recognized opportunity of need to urgently strengthen India’s furniture manufacturing and export ecosystem. Furniture is one of the fastest growing consumer sectors in the world and is expected to cross USD 800 billion globally. India has all ingredients to lead this industry – a skilled workforce, good timber resource, a rich craft tradition, and strong domestic and global demand. Yet our share in global furniture exports is just one per cent, far beyond much smaller economies like Vietnam and Malaysia. Even though we are one of the largest furniture producers in the world, India still imported almost half a billion dollars worth of furniture in 2023. This clearly shows gap in our manufacturing capacity, our product range, and our global competitiveness. The challenges are well known. Nearly 85 per cent of furniture in the country is made by informal carpenters, which limits scaling up and standardization. High duties on engineered wood and fittings increase costs. We lack design centres, testing labs, and strong global branding. Our logistics, especially long distance from ports, make it harder for Indian exporters to compete. In this context, port-linked regions, like Kakinada with deep-draft facilities and land for integrated clusters, offer a major opportunity. Reducing logistics alone can significantly improve export competitiveness. This sector is 11.12.2025 966 labour intensive, innovation driven, and capable of creating lakhs of skilled jobs, formalizing artisans, boosting exports, and supporting timber plantations. What we need now is a focused national strategy. Therefore, I request the Union Government to consider the following: establishing mega furniture parks with common CNC facilities, seasoning yards, and port-linked logistic hubs; launching a PLI scheme for furniture manufacturing as recommended by NITI Aayog; reducing import duties on engineered wood fittings and adhesives; setting up national design and skill institute for furniture, technology and industrial prototyping; and creating a branding and export promotion mission to showcase Indian furniture globally. Through right interventions, our MSMEs can grow into global manufacturers and make India a strong and trusted player in international furniture value chain. SUSHRI S. JOTHIMANI (KARUR): Hon Chairperson Sir, Vanakkam. Thankyou for this opportunity. I have already raised brought this issue in this august House for the attention of Union Government. I once again raise this issue. In Vennaimalai of Karur District, people who are living in Inam (endowment) land with proper patta (the ownership right) should be protected from being vacated on the basis of a Court Order. Every week and on every Fridays, the people of this area have sleepless nights and lots of fear in mind because the houses and shops are sealed quoting Contempt of Court Order. These are not temple lands as viewed by the Courts. These are lands which were donated to those who offered service to God since the last century. Therefore this land belongs to them. The ownership rights have been properly registered in the names of these families. Patta or the document of ownership right has been acquired by the owners of this Inam land 30 years ago. They have even purchased this land by paying money in a legal manner. Registration has English translation of the speech originally delivered in Tamil. 11.12.2025 968 also been done by the government after payment of required stamp duties by them. Property tax has been levied and property owners has the receipts of this payment. Banks also had given loans to buy these properties as they possessed Patta for several generations. How can they be considered as encroachers? In the name of temples and on the basis of court orders how fair it is to force them to vacate their houses? There are no answers for these simple questions. They claim that these people are engaged in commercial activities. Their shops are sealed by referring to Court orders as they run a small tea shop in front their homes. Can’t they have small restaurant in front of their homes? How can this be considered as a crime? Whether our people have constructed multi-storied buildings and having business in a large scale? They are having only residences. What will they do for their livelihood? How will they educate their children? How can they run their families? They have Patta in their names. If it is so, how can it be illegal to have small businesses? This issue doesn't only pertain to Vennaimalai, Pugzhali Malai, Venjamankudalur areas but it has a larger area. The same person has filed a case in the Court regarding 20 such temple lands in Karur district. If such a situation continues, Karur district which had name and fame during the Chera dynasty will completely disappear. Both the Union and State governments have to shoulder responsibility in protecting Karur district. Even if Tamil Nadu government issues Order for protection of such affected people in Karur, within 2 hours of issuance of such an Order, the Opposite parties approach the Courts and get those Orders them stayed. Eyes filled with tears and sorrows of our people are giving us so much pain. With 11.12.2025 969 introduction of one particular bill, the State of Kashmir has been changed onto a Union Territory. Can't government find a solution to the affected people of Vennaimalai? This issue has further aggravated and as much as 13 lakh acres of temple land throughout Tamil Nadu is under threat. Several thousands of people have been facing unbearable sorrow and suffering. In consultation with State government, I urge that the Union government should bring a legislation to protect the houses and livelihood of people of Tamil Nadu particularly of Vennaimalai in Karur district. Thank you.
